QUICK TIP: Make Your Email Address on Your Website a Link

Every ecommerce website NEEDS contact information in some easy-to-find place. Customers will have a higher level of trust when visiting your website if they know they can contact a live person.

The themes within Shopify have a place where you can add your contact information – usually in the Footer (Online Store > Customize Themes > Footer). Keep in mind that when you type something into that Contact text box, it will be plain text – meaning, not text that will lead to an email form or contact page.

If you want to make your email address “clickable” to launch your visitors email program when they click your email address, here is the code you need to type:

<a href=”mailto:yourname@yourwebsite.com”>Click to email</a>

just type your actual email address in the placeholder.

Now, when a visitor clicks on the text “Click to email”, their email program will launch with your email address already filled in for them.

NOTE: You can change the text “Click to email” to anything you want it to say. Some people type their email right there, such as in this next example:

Click <a href=”mailto:jd@thirdshiftvintage.com”>jd@thirdshiftvintage.com</a> to contact me via email.

Give this a try! I hope this helps!

  • I have watched a TON of user tests in various formats of a wide variety of ecommerce website over the years. I have also been a user tester for a long time. I can tell you that in almost every test, if the visitor couldn’t find a way to contact the website owner in a very quick and easy way, they LEAVE the website! That’s how important it is to have your contact information on a website.
  • If you have an established website, and you DON’T have your contact information (email, or phone number, or contact form), I can assure you that you would convert visitors into customers better just by adding your contact information.
